Hong Kong police have detained three men accused of stealing foreign currency from a passenger during a flight from Bangkok to Hong Kong.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, came to light after the affected passenger reported missing cash from their backpack, which had been stored in the overhead compartment.
Upon receiving the report yesterday (Mar 2), the airport police swiftly conducted a preliminary investigation, leading to the arrest of the three suspects from the mainland, aged between 29 and 37. The stolen amount was identified as foreign currency valued at approximately HK$8,400.
Currently, the suspects are being held in police custody, and the case has been handed over to the airport police district.
In response to this incident and to curb similar offenses, the airport police have intensified their public awareness campaigns and educational initiatives. Collaborative efforts with key airport stakeholders, including airlines, the Hong Kong Airport Authority, and the Aviation Security Company Limited, aim to bolster intelligence-led enforcement actions.
These measures include the creation of a suspect database, enhanced crime analysis through intelligence gathering, and strengthened intelligence sharing with airlines. This strategic approach helps in identifying higher-risk routes and periods prone to criminal activities.
Additionally, the airport police regularly organize crime prevention seminars for airline staff to heighten awareness and vigilance on identified vulnerable routes.
Passengers are urged to remain alert and secure their carry-on luggage by locking it and keeping it within sight. It is advisable to carry cash and valuable items personally or entrust them to reliable companions. Before disembarking, passengers should also ensure all personal belongings are accounted for.
