Chan posted the blog on Sunday that Hong Kong must adapt to international changes through transformation, drive development with innovation and lead the future with technology.
“Developing AI into a key industry for Hong Kong will allow us to break free from outdated development models and frameworks, creating new job opportunities and increasing income through new economic growth points, thereby advancing the diversification and higher-level development of Hong Kong’s economic structure and industries,” he said.
Chan highlighted that Hong Kong benefits from “one country, two systems” and its international characteristics.
He stated the city combines data from mainland and the global community, along with strong research capabilities from five global-top universities, positioning it to advance AI research and applications, and thereby, developing into a hub for international collaboration in the AI industry.
Regarding talent cultivation, he stated the government plans to organize over 100 local cutting-edge technology and start-up companies to connect the best industry resources with primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong.
He stated this will involve various forms of interaction exchanges and field visits, allowing students to engage directly with technology products and integrate coding into practical scenarios.
“This approach will enable students to ‘see and touch’ the applications of AI technology, inspiring their participation.”
Chan also noted that the initiative has garnered strong support from major tech companies like Tencent, Alibaba, Lenovo and SenseTime.
Additionally, the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks and Cyberport will coordinate numerous tech startups to participate.
