A group of 13 individuals were arrested on Wednesday and Thursday (Jan 22-23) after police received 42 reports from citizens who had been scammed by online ticket sales totaling HK$800,000.
The arrestees, consisting of seven males and six females aged 19 to 56, allegedly disguised themselves as scalpers online and claimed they were selling tickets for events including the Clockenflap festival and Andy Lau Tak wah's concert since October of last year.
When victims expressed interest in purchasing tickets, the arrestees instructed them to transfer money to an account and immediately cut off contact after receiving the payment.
It is learned that one victim reportedly lost HK$640,000 after booking 544 tickets for Andy Lau Tak-wah's concert held at the Hong Kong Coliseum.
Furthermore, police discovered that the involved bank accounts had been utilized for money laundering related to other cases, totaling over HK$22 million.
Police said the group is suspected of conspiracy to defraud, obtaining property by deception, and money laundering, and is currently detained for further investigation.
Additionally, police urge citizens to purchase tickets through official channels, recognize reputable sellers when shopping online, and complete transactions in person.
