Hong Kong Bar Association chairman Victor Dawes emphasized the importance of engaging in comprehensive dialogue between the legal sector and society, particularly in light of the significant events that have transpired in Hong Kong over recent years.
Dawes, who is nearing the end of his three-year term, recently shared in an interview with Sing Tao Daily -- the sister paper of The Standard -- that his role as the Association chairman has been the most significant of his career.
He voiced his concerns regarding the geopolitical challenges for Hong Kong, expressing a desire to reassure the international community that the city continues to be a premier jurisdiction.
He commended the younger generation of local legal professionals, expressing confidence in their capacity to address various challenges effectively.
Dawes noted that many overseas colleagues pay close attention to the judgments issued by Hong Kong courts, particularly in areas like liquidation and international arbitration.
He affirmed that when questions arise about Hong Kong's judicial system, it's important to recognize that Hong Kong's judiciary excels in many areas.
Dawes acknowledged that while challenges stemming from US-China relations are inevitable, many jurisdictions face their own obstacles. He remains confident that the city has the talent in the legal and judicial sectors to navigate these issues.
When asked about any regrets during his tenure, he expressed that he had exerted his utmost effort; however, he acknowledged that there is always potential for enhancement.
