The government has allocated up to HK$940 million to the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) to support sports development in this fiscal year -- representing a 40 percent rise in funding over five years ago -- Chief Secretary Eric Chan Kwok-ki said on Sunday.
Speaking at the Hong Kong, China's Paris 2024 Olympic Team Celebration Raceday held by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Chan underscored the government's dedication to fostering the sports industry in the city.
Chan highlighted that HK$940 million was allocated to HKSI through Elite Athletes Development Fund to provide stable financial resources for around 1,500 athletes. The Institute also promotes the dual development of athletes in both sports and academics by offering scholarships and providing support for retired athletes.
He emphasized the importance of support from various sectors for sports development, including the Hong Kong Jockey Club's three-year Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme, alongside government efforts.
He added that next year will feature the 15th National Games, the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities, and the 9th Special Olympics Games, with the Kai Tak Sports Park set to open as well.
