With Ocean Park now having six pandas that include the elderly, the middle-aged, and the youth, the park will in the future develop relevant panda-themed intellectual property and would consider filming documentaries of the pandas, said its chairman Paulo Pong Kin-yee.
Speaking on a radio program on Friday morning, Pong said the park may capitalize on the six pandas to develop relevant intellectual property, with a possibility of creating cartoons, comics, and even shooting documentaries featuring the pandas.
He said the park could reference the South Korean documentary on Fu Bao, which tells the story of South Korea's first native-born giant panda and the Bao family.
The aim is to establish a unique Hong Kong panda IP to attract more mainland and overseas visitors, he said.
With the increasing number of pandas, there is also a need to update the park’s facilities, said Pong.
The chairman said the park currently has sufficient manpower and world-class conservation capabilities but requires the expansion of new facilities.
Discussions with the government are ongoing regarding the location, size, and budget of the new enclosure, he added.
He said the two giant panda cubs given birth by Ying Ying will need separate living spaces in two years, necessitating the completion of the new building before then.
