Cathay Pacific flight 341 left Shanghai and approached Hong Kong at around 7 pm on Tuesday, but what was meant to be a short flight turned into a flight of terror as bad weather caused chaos on-board when pilots had to abort two attempted landings.
One of the failed landing attempts at Hong Kong International Airport saw the aircraft climb to 1,310 meters within two minutes from 152m after the captain had decided to abort the landing at the very last moment, with the aircraft climbing to 2,164m four minutes later.
The captain made a second attempt but again aborted the decision. The aircraft was eventually diverted to Shenzhen airport to refuel before safely landing in Hong Kong at 2.42 am on Wednesday.
Footage surfaced online yesterday showing a dimmed cabin and violent shaking during the landing attempts. It was also said that passengers screamed and puked, with luggage flying back and forth due to the turbulence.
One passenger on the flight recalled the horrifying experience onboard, saying that the whole aircraft was filled with the smell of vomit amid the bumpy ride.
In response, Cathay said nine flights were affected by the bad weather on Tuesday (Apr 30), with the flights diverted to Shenzhen, Macau, and Kaohsiung. The flight giant added that all affected customers have returned to Hong Kong safely and apologized for the inconvenience caused.
