The Environment Protection Department (EPD) invited four eco-friendly tableware providers to demonstrate the use of their products for customers' reference on Thursday, but the display went wrong after a bamboo fork broke twice when cutting a steak.
The arrangement came after the recent heated debate in society on the use of paper utensils.
It was a smooth display when using a paper straw to poke through a bubble tea's plastic wrap or a paper spoon to enjoy the lotus-wrapped sticky rice.
There were also successful displays of using a paper box to hold hot water and soak instant noodles, as well as brewing coffee with a paper cup.
But things got embarrassing when the connecting joint of a bamboo-made fork broke while trying to cut a steak. The providers successfully cut the steak on their third attempt after breaking two forks.
When asked if restaurants would need to purchase different eco-friendly utensils to cater different dishes, the provider said it is necessary to understand the menu of the restaurants before supplying the most suitable utensils.
They also believe new products will soon be introduced to address different situations.
