Hong Kong Customs announced on Thursday that they had detected and seized suspected illicit cigarettes, with an estimated market value of about HK$26 million, in Lok Ma Chau on Wednesday.
Marine police had previously received intelligence stating that there were some criminals who were smuggling cigaratetes via sea routes.
And after conducting an in-depth investigation, the police, along with customs officials, conducted a joint operation in San Tin, Lok Ma Chau, raiding four container-houses.
Upon inspection, they discovered and seized a batch of about 5.8 million suspected illicit cigarettes worth about HK$26 million inside the container-houses.
The seized cigarettes also came with a potential duty of about HK$19 million.
The case was handed over to customs for a follow-up investigation.
