Passing sentence, the magistrate said the court must impose a deterrent punishment, especially for senior-ranking cops who committed crimes. He noted that fines are not enough as a punishment.
The court previously heard that the defendant Ng Wing-yan, 30, stole two boxes of blueberries, a pack of steak, two packs of lamb, two boxes of shrimps and a pack of fish fillet at AEON in Skyline Plaza, Tsuen Wan on November 4 last year. The goods were worth HK$786.2 in total.
