The Ichthyological Society of Hong Kong (ISHK) has relocated from Aberdeen to Lake Egret in Tai Po Kau. A grand opening ceremony was held last Sunday (January 8) to celebrate a new stage for the Society’s work.

ISHK is a non-profit Academic Charity founded in 2008 with the aims of promoting ichthyology research and knowledge through integrating. Through educating the public on the importance of environmental conservation, biodiversity and ecosystem values, it promotes the symbiotic harmony between nature and humans.
Located at in the Lake Egret Nature Park in Tolo Harbour of Tai Po, the Society enjoys the rich ecological resources of the nearby estuary mudflats, mangroves and brackish lagoons. The precious natural environment not only opens a door for Hong Kong people to get in touch with a wide range of wildlife, but also marks a new chapter for local ichthyological research and nature education.
With the support and partnership of Utahloy Education, the Society introduces a special indoor and outdoor experiential course “STREAM” for students that is based on the current STEM learning system with the inclusion of the “art” and “recreation” elements, which facilities deeper understanding for students through personal experiences.
Professor CHONG Dee-hwa, founding president of ISHK said: “We takes education as our social mission. Our Society systematises the objective findings obtained from research in order to promote the education of natural history. To learn about something, there is nothing better than personal experiences. Therefore, the Society wishes to provide citizens the opportunities to participate in research of life science, so as to raise the public’s awareness of nature and environmental protection.”
Visitors can have better observation on around 30 kinds of representative fish species in the Natural Aquarium in the new location that recreates their natural habitats in the upper, middle and lower reaches of rivers and streams in Hong Kong for the fishes.
Meanwhile, the “Estuary and Mangrove Research Centre” is specially set up at the new location for real-time ecological monitoring, involving various biological and environmental factors such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, etc.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Professor Chong Dee-hwa, founding president of ISHK (center), together with Nicholas Charles Allen, chairman of Link Asset Management (left) and Chu Kwok-keung, vice president of Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers and member of Legislative Council (right).

The Natural Aquarium is opened at the new location of ISHK next to Lake Egret, Tai Po Kau.
