Hong Kong has reported 140 Covid-19 cases on Sunday, including 104 cases related to the Kwai Chung Estate outbreak.
It is the highest number reported since the fifth wave broke out, and the first time for the daily number to exceed 100 over the past year.
Among the cases, 15 were imported and 125 were local infections. Ninety four cases were Yat Kwai House residents or their visitors. Ying Kwai House and Nga Kwai House also reported nine and one cases respectively.
An infected Yat Kwai House resident turned out to be a patient care assistant who works at Prince of Wales Hospital. The person helped with preparing materials inside an operation room.
Six patients were listed as contact and needed to get tested. Another 140 staffers also underwent testing.
The staffer met up with another assistant who works in the pediatric intensive care unit at Princess Margaret Hospital. The second assistant tested positive after the gathering at Yat Kwai House on January 16.
Another Yat Kwai resident works at a Mannings shop in Kwai Hing. Another colleague also tested positive, with an outbreak suspected at the store.
Authorities fail to find the source of infection for four cases, including a 18-year-old female student at Delia Memorial School (Glee Path) in Mei Foo. She lives in Tai Wo Hau Estate.
The others were a six-year-old boy who lives in Block A of Coastal Skyline, Tung Chung; a 31-year-old woman who lives in Mei Pak Court in Tai Wai; and a 44-year-old man who works as an elevator maintenance worker at Mitsubishi and lives in Sunshine City in Ma On Shan.
Hong Kong also recorded more than 100 preliminary positive cases on Sunday, and many cases involved staff members working at elderly care homes, including a nurse at Evergreen nursing home at Kwai Chung Estate, an elderly at Joyous Place in Sha Tin and a cleaner at Salvation Army Nam Shan Residence for Senior Citizens.
