Three district councillors have resigned from their post as the third batch of councillors -- from North District, Tai Po, Sai Kung and Sha Tin -- take their oaths on Monday afternoon.
Hong Kong’s legislature passed a bill in May requiring district councillors to take an oath pledging allegiance to the city. The city’s National Security Law also requires those holding public office to take the oath to uphold the Basic Law.
The three district councillors include Chandler Chan Nok-hang and Mike Chan Pui-ming from the Sha Tin district, and Yu Tsun-ning from the Sai Kung district.
Chandler Chan announced last week that he would step down from his post, citing health issues, while Mike Chan announced yesterday he would resign, slamming the government as a sore loser.
He said the government is trying to overturn the 2019 District Council election results, using the oath-taking requirement to “cherry-pick” the councilors.
Meanwhile, Yu this afternoon posted on his social media, announcing his resignation and thanked everyone for their support.
After the three resigned, there will only be 52 councilors attending the ceremony held at North Point Community Hall.
