HKU moves up nine positions in worldwide ranking

The University of Hong Kong has moved up nine positions in a worldwide university ranking from last year, reaching 30th among 1,662 universities from 99 countries.

Times Higher Education today announced the results of the World University Rankings 2022.

For the first time ever, a total of four Hong Kong universities entered the top 100.

HKU ranks 30th, up from 39th a year ago.

Chinese University ranks 49th, claiming a top 50 finish for the first time. It ranked 56th last year.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology ranks 66th, down from 56th a year ago.

Polytechnic University joined the top 100 for the first time at 91st.

University of Oxford – which led the way in the global search for a Covid-19 vaccine – retains the top spot for the sixth consecutive year.

It was followed by the California Institute of Technology and Harvard University.

Mainland China continues its rise up the table, with Peking University and Tsinghua University at 16th, claiming mainland’s highest ever finish and giving it two places in the top 20 for the first time ever.

There was also a record number of 10 mainland universities ranked in the top 200.

Singapore’s National University of Singapore (21st) and Japan’s University of Tokyo (35th) claim their countries highest ever finish under this current methodology introduced in 2016.
