China has demoted the director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, and appointed Xia Baolong, a 67-year-old vice chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the State Council says.
Zhang Xiaoming was re-named to deputy director of the office.

Earlier, Beijing removed Wang Zhimin and appointed Luo Huining, who was today named a deputy director of the office, which promotes cooperation and coordination of political, economic and cultural ties between mainland China and the two special administrative regions.
Fu Ziying, who heads the Macau Liaison Office, will be a deputy director as well.

Xia Baolong, a 67-year-old vice chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, becomes Beijing's top diplomat in Hong Kong.

Zhang Xiaoming, who is being replaced, took over from Wang Guangya as the new director in September 2017.
