The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) will organize an open day on March 22 and 23, allowing members of the public to get up close to the city’s weather forecasters to learn about their work.
Adopting the theme of the World Meteorological Day this year, "Closing the Early Warning Gap Together", the exhibitions of the Open Day will showcase various services of the HKO, as well as enhance public understanding and awareness of climate change and extreme weather.
The Hong Kong Observatory was established in 1883 and is located on a small hill at 134A Nathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui. The building itself, known as the "1883 Building," is of historical significance and was declared a monument in 1984.
This two-story structure features unique Victorian colonial architecture, including arched windows and doors, and long corridors, offering a glimpse into the beauty of architecture from a century ago.
Since its establishment, the Observatory has been dedicated to meteorological monitoring and forecasting. Its early missions included geomagnetic observations, astronomical timekeeping, and tropical cyclone warnings.
With advancements in technology, the Observatory now utilizes cutting-edge techniques to provide diversified services, such as aviation meteorology, microclimate monitoring, and radiation monitoring.
During this Open Day, citizens will have the opportunity to visit facilities such as the studio, history room, and seismometer cellar, and learn how the Observatory integrates technology to address climate challenges.
Whether you are a science enthusiast, a student, or a citizen interested in meteorology, this event is not to be missed! Here’s how to sign up for free admission.
Members of the public can register for free admission through the designated website (https://www.hkoopenday.gov.hk/en/tickets) to receive a QR code for entry.
