Former chief executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor’s office switch from One Pacific Place at Admiralty to Immigration Tower in Wan Chai may once again sparked a debate over the use of public funds, as the SAR government said it is set to splash out HK$2.8 million to renovate her new office.
The Office of Former Chief Executives of the HKSAR said previously that Lam's office will be relocated to the 23rd floor of Immigration Tower in Wan Chai. Lam's Admiralty office cost taxpayers more than HK$9.17 million in the 2023-24 fiscal year, including HK$5.67 million in rent.
According to the SAR government, renovation works in the Wan Chai building are currently underway, with an estimated expense of around HK$2.8 million.
It noted that the Admiralty office’s previous renovation works were managed by the Architectural Services Department, with the project costing a total of HK$6.55 million back in 2022.
The landlord of the office space at the prime commercial building has agreed that there is no need to restore the interior to its original condition after the lease expires in May this year, it added.
