Cathay Pacific flight CX840, originally scheduled to fly from Hong Kong International Airport to New York, was diverted to Tokyo Haneda Airport early this morning due to an unexpected medical incident on board.
According to the flight tracking website Flightradar24, the A350 aircraft involved in the incident, flight number CX840, was originally scheduled to depart at 4.15 pm on Saturday (Oct 5) Hong Kong time, but it was later changed to depart at 5.31 pm the same day. It was expected to arrive at 9.04 pm local New York time yesterday (Oct 5).
However, the passenger plane turned back over the eastern waters of Hokkaido and landed at Haneda Airport in Japan at 1.40 am local time this morning.
Responding to media inquiries, the flight giant stated that the CX840, which was set to depart from Hong Kong towards the John F. Kennedy International Airport, had to divert its flight towards the Tokyo Haneda Airport after a passenger reported discomfort.
The flight giant noted that the flight landed safely at 1.44 am local Tokyo time, and the airport staff arranged for the passenger to be hospitalized for medical attention.
To comply with the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department's regulations on crew operations and rest hours, the flight had to stay overnight at the airport, and the company immediately provided assistance to other passengers and arranged for accommodations.
The flight is set to resume its journey to New York at 9.20 pm local Tokyo time.
The spokesperson stated that the safety of their passengers and crew is their main priority, apologized to the passengers affected by the incident, and expressed their gratitude for their understanding.
