Counterfeit HK$500 banknotes have resurfaced in the market, with several businesses in Mong Kok reporting suspicious transactions.
A man described as blonde and tattooed was recently observed frequenting stores in Mong Kok New Town Mall, purchasing drinks with HK$500 Bank of China banknotes.
Police have received multiple reports from store owners. Between September 3 and 7, after closing and recounting their cash, they discovered suspected counterfeit HK$500 Bank of China banknotes bearing the serial numbers ES or AJ.
It is believed that the man was not acting alone and had accomplices nearby serving as lookouts.
The case has been transferred to the Mong Kok police district for further investigation.
In a related incident in another police district, a crime involving counterfeit banknotes with the same serial code was reported last week.
Last Saturday (Sep 7), a 65-year-old taxi driver picked up passengers at the junction of Dundas Street, heading to the Grand Waterfront in To Kwa Wan.
The passenger paid the HK$60 taxi fare with a HK$500 note, and the unsuspecting driver provided HK$440 in change.
The following morning, the driver discovered that the banknote was a counterfeit Bank of China note with the serial number AJ and promptly contacted the police for assistance.
This case has been forwarded to the Commercial Crime Bureau for further action.
