A surging demand for fresh foods has led leading local supermarket chain Wellcome to launch ‘Wellcome Fresh’ in Westwood, Kennedy Town. It is Hong Kong’s biggest supermarket boasting an area of 50,000 square feet, with 23 themed zones offering over 15,000 fresh food items sourced locally and across the globe.
Wellcome Fresh is a revolutionary supermarket concept that brings customers the best of two worlds: value-for-money fresh produce and quality cooked food. It also combines the style and atmosphere of a wet market with the convenience and services of a supermarket.
“In response to escalating demands for fresh food, we at Wellcome are well-placed and committed to offering quality food at the best price,” says Yvonne Lee, Wellcome’s Commercial Director (Fresh Food). “Our new ‘Wellcome Fresh’ store is bringing to customers the most comprehensive range of food ever.”
A myriad of pleasant surprises are in store. At the colourful fresh fruit and vegetables section, look out for New Zealand high oil-content avocados, Australian brown Dolci oranges, Ecuadorian yellow dragon fruit and authentic Japanese vegetables amongst other fascinating selections.
Local produce are plentiful and popular. Go for Hong Kong-grown mushrooms, traditional egg and carrot noodles, hydroponic, organic and pesticide-free salad, and fish balls made from sustainably-caught fish, just to name a few.
Bustling with the lively ambience of a wet market, the stalls are manned by enthusiastic staff who will introduce you to the day’s best catch or jet-fresh live seafood, from Norwegian king crabs to Japanese scallops and abalone. At the meat stall, hormone-free pork and free-range chicken are on offer. You can also avail of value-added services, including the cleaning, descaling and cooking of fresh seafood according to customers’ taste and preference.
The Food Street is bursting with local and international delicacies, ready to eat and ready to go. Highlights include Hong Kong’s most sought-after Japanese and Korean cuisines, cooked on the spot using ingredients from these countries.
Tasty bites not to be missed at Food Street are traditional local treats like egg rolls and pork jerky, pineapple croissants from the bakery, and iconic local eats including pei pa duck and typhoon shelter fried crabs, while Pizza Hut has also made its presence in the supermarket.
Wellcome Fresh caters to a wide range of customers. Busy city-dwellers will find easy meal solutions appealing, especially the variety of slow-cooked Australian food packs. Bakery aficionados, vegetarians, pet owners and wine lovers all have their respective dedicated zones in the supermarket.
Apart from the impressive selection of fresh foods, Wellcome Fresh has incorporated green and fun elements. Shoppers may notice that the red floor, made of used glass and mirrors, sparkles and dazzles; only energy-efficient LED lights are used in the store; and trolleys are made of recycled plastics, saving one-third energy to make and transport. In addition, some vegetables are sold individually to reduce wastage, and there are also exclusive Wellcome Fresh shopping bags available for shoppers to reuse many times.
“Despite the rising popularity of online shopping, 90 percent of our customers prefer to shop in physical supermarkets, and for this reason, we have made special efforts to make it an enjoyable experience,” explains Elman Lee, Wellcome’s Marketing Director.
Wellcome Fresh also comes with a new logo and smart staff uniform to give shoppers a breezy, one-stop shopping experience.
Currently, Market Place has exclusively brought in Ikea Close to You and celebrity chef Grégoire Michaud’s Bread Pantry in Discovery Place.
