According to reports, Lee’s health condition deteriorated last month with her family members being told to be mentally prepared for the worst.
Her friend, fellow actress and opera singer Tam Sin-hung, confirmed the news to the Hong Kong media today.
She revealed that the late actress had difficulties swallowing food over the past few days and was on a liquid diet. She took a turn for the worse at home today and was rushed to the hospital.
"Who would have thought that she would be gone just a few hours later," Tam added.
Lee joined the entertainment industry when she was 16 and acted in over 400 films.
Lee had not appeared in public for a number of years and reportedly had mobility problems, relying on a wheelchair to get around. She also reportedly fell three times at her home in 2012, forcing her to be admitted into the hospital for treatment.
