Secretary for Security John Lee Ka-chiu said Taiwan is making a big deal over nothing for creating obstacles over Chan Tong-kai’s departure to surrender for his murder case.

Lee stressed that Hong Kong has no law to provide legal assistance for Taiwan, accusing Taiwan of disrespecting Hong Kong’s jurisdiction by repeating requests for mutual legal assistance, an arrangement which was not legally permissible given Taiwan was part of the nation.
“Chan has indicated multiple times that he is willing to go to Taiwan to bare his own responsibilities, it is shocking to see Taiwan refusing to let Chan, who is wanted by them, enter Taiwan territory,” said Lee.
He also took the body-in-cement murder case that happened in Tsuen Wan in 2016, in which the wanted suspect was deported from Taiwan, then handed over to Hong Kong police.
He claimed this case has not involved any kind of legal assistance, Hong Kong has not asked for any evidence collected by Taiwan authorities as well.
Lee emphasized that Chan under police protection is of careful assessment, but the Hong Kong government has never restrained Chan from leaving Hong Kong.
“The police co-operation mechanism can only be initiated once Chan was allowed to board a plane to Taiwan,” Lee added.

Secretary for Security John Lee Ka-chiu urges Taiwan authorities to refrain from political considerations and to deal with this matter practically in the name of justice.
