From ticking clocks and hunting calls to musical surprises, prank endings and a crashing chandelier, Haydn & The Prince is a witty reenactment of Haydn’s musical era under the magnificent Prince Esterhazy that will delight audiences of all ages.
Presented by the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong (CCOHK), the two shows will be staged on Sunday, 30 April 2023, at the Hong Kong City Hall, at 4:30pm and 7:30pm, respectively.
Curated, scripted and directed by playwright Leanne Nicholls with storytelling by actor Matthew Creed, Haydn & The Prince also travels to the London Hanover Rooms, the scene of Haydn’s London debut and the well-documented chandelier crash during The Miracle Symphony.
Famously referred to as the “Father of the Symphony”, Haydn’s musical genius is celebrated through live performances of his best-loved symphonies with their curious titles such as Surprise, London, The Clock, Maria Theresa, The Chase and Farewell.
Characters are performed and acted out by the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong and guest artists Marc Ngan as the Prince, Jessica Ng as the Prince’s Wife, Candice Moore as the Empress Maria Theresa and Kelvin Lok as the Servant. Conductor/actor Philip Chu plays Haydn, the affable music maestro who also had a gift for hunting grouse and quickly solving disputes amongst his squabbling musicians.
Opulent costumes of the era are designed and selected by Leanne Nicholls, while the classical style backdrop with lighting is exquisitely designed by Ernesto Maurice Corpus.
Haydn & The Prince is a family-friendly programme suitable for children aged three and above. The performance is in English and lasts approximately 65 minutes without an intermission.
Tickets priced at $450, $350, $220, with half-price concessions for full-time students, senior citizens, people with disabilities and minder, and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients, are available from all URBTIX outlets.
