The businessman son of an infamous South Korean tycoon will be extradited from the United States today to face charges of embezzling money from the company behind the 2014 Sewol ferry disaster.
South Korea's justice ministry said Yoo Hyuk Kee - son of Yoo Byung Eun, the owner of Sewol operator Chonghaejin Marine - would be repatriated to Incheon.
The 50-year-old is accused of embezzling around 29 billion won (HK$173.62 million).
Yoo reportedly a green card holder - was arrested in New York in July 2020 after Seoul put him on Interpol's wanted list.
The ferry went down off Jindo in April 2014, with 476 people aboard. Of the 304 deaths, 250 were pupils from a high school.
Shock gave way to outrage after it became clear the disaster was almost entirely man-made - the result of an illegal redesign, an overloaded cargo bay, and an unhealthy nexus between operators and state regulators.
