China's consulate general in Sapporo has advised Chinese citizens in Japan to follow official tsunami warnings and evacuation orders following a major earthquake off the coast of Aomori prefecture on Monday night.
The magnitude 7.6 quake prompted the Japan Meteorological Agency to issue tsunami alerts for coastal areas of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate prefectures, warning of waves up to three meters high.
The consulate urged citizens, especially those in the Pacific coastal regions of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate, to stay informed through official channels, comply with local evacuation instructions, and stay away from coastal areas.
It warned that tsunami waves could strike repeatedly and advised against approaching the shore to retrieve belongings or observe the situation.
The consulate also reminded citizens to remain vigilant for aftershocks and secondary disasters. Travelers were advised to check the status of public transportation and stay updated through the consulate's website, social media and Japanese media reports.
In case of emergency, citizens were told to contact local police and seek assistance from the consulate.
