Orphaned monkey finds comfort in stuffed toy after mother's rejection

A young monkey at a zoo in Ichikawa, Chiba prefecture, has captured hearts online after videos showed him carrying a stuffed toy for comfort while struggling to integrate with other monkeys.

The seven-month-old monkey, named Punch (パンチ), was abandoned by its mother at birth and raised by zookeepers. About a month ago, zoo staff attempted to reintroduce Punch to the monkey group, providing the stuffed toy as emotional support due to his lack of maternal care and resulting insecurity.

Despite his efforts, Punch has difficulty fitting in, often seen carrying the toy as he moves among the other monkeys. Videos show him sometimes lying on top of the stuffed animal, a sight that has moved many viewers.

The zoo confirmed Punch's story, explaining his background and the provision of the toy. His lonely appearance has drawn sympathy, prompting visitors to see him and cheer him on. Clips shared online show his interactions with other monkeys, with many hoping he will soon successfully integrate and no longer feel isolated.
