Anti-aging is more than just fighting wrinkles and spots to maintain a youthful appearance; it's about preventing the body from aging prematurely. A nutritionist recommends 6 longevity-promoting foods and beverages that can slow aging. One key nutrient group has been identified as crucial for delaying aging and reducing health risks, with research showing it can effectively reverse biological age. Consistently eating these for just 8 weeks can make you biologically 2 years younger.

Nutritionist Lui Mei-bao explains on her Facebook page that a healthy lifestyle makes people feelyounger, and scientists have recently found a way to quantify this feeling. "Biological age" reflects the internal health status and rate of aging of the body, determining whether someone looks younger or older than their chronological age. The metric used to measure biological age is called "Epigenetic Age," which works by analyzing chemical markers (methylation) on DNA to predict health risks.
While studying the relationship between methylation and diet, scientists made a startling discovery: specific dietary patterns may not only slow aging but potentially reverse the biological clock. In an 8-week experiment, a group of healthy middle-aged men (50-72 years old) were randomly divided into two groups. One group followed specific diet and lifestyle recommendations, adjusting their diet, exercise, sleep, and meditation practices, while the control group maintained their original habits.
After 8 weeks, the experimental group's average epigenetic age was 2.04 years younger than at the start of the study. In contrast, the control group's average epigenetic age was 1.10 years older. This means a significant difference of 3.14 years in biological age emerged between the two groups in just two months.
6 Major Anti-Aging Foods & Beverages (Including 2 Types of Tea)
Researchers found that the reason the experimental group's epigenetic age became younger was largely due to a specific set of "polyphenol-rich foods" in their diet. These foods were categorized as "Methylation Adaptogens"—polyphenol-rich foods with the potential to regulate DNA methylation. The following 6 foods and beverages, rich in polyphenols, were classified as such in the study:
- Turmeric
- Garlic
- Berries (e.g., blueberries, strawberries, raspberries)
- Green Tea
- Oolong Tea
- Rosemary
The researchers clearly found that the greater the intake of these "Methylation Adaptogens," the more significant the reduction in epigenetic age. Although participants in the experimental group lost an average of 4.61 pounds (about 2.1 kg), weight change was not a significant factor in predicting epigenetic age reversal in the final data analysis model.
Polyphenol Supplementation More Effective for Anti-Aging Than Weight Loss
Lui explains that this indicates the age-reversing effect comes more from the unique properties and bioactive components of these specific foods, rather than merely from calorie restriction or weight loss itself.
Furthermore, researchers observed that participants whose epigenetic age was "older" than their chronological age at the start of the study showed the most pronounced age-reversal effects after dietary and lifestyle adjustments. Therefore, if you feel your physical condition is worse than your peers or you look older, significant improvement is achievable through the right dietary changes—a very encouraging finding.
Lui adds that this study has limitations, including a small sample size and a primarily Caucasian participant pool. Thus, more diverse and larger-scale studies are needed to confirm the effects of "Methylation Adaptogens" in other populations. Nonetheless, incorporating these polyphenol-rich natural foods into a balanced diet is undoubtedly a wise and healthy choice.
