China's top-ranked table tennis player, Wang Chuqin, suffered a shock defeat in the men's singles event, a day after having his paddle broken.
Wang, 24, and Sun Yingsha won mixed doubles gold against North Korea on Tuesday but his elation quickly turned to anger after a photographer accidentally snapped his paddle while jostling to take a picture.
Now a 4-2 defeat to 26th-ranked Truls Moregard of Sweden has knocked out Wang at the round-of-32 stage.
But he refused to blame his replacement paddle for his defeat.
"It didn't really have an influence on the match," Wang said. "It was just that my opponent played really, really well."
He will next compete in the men's team event.
Moregard, 22, had lost in all eight previous matches against Wang.
