A soon-to-be-married Hong Kong woman urged her parents not to buy gold jewelry due to high prices, only for them to gift her diamonds, which she says hold even less value and strain the family’s already tight finances.
A woman preparing for her wedding posted on Threads that she had persuaded her parents against buying gold as a traditional wedding gift because gold prices remain very high and she wanted them to save money.
She was surprised when they instead purchased diamonds, prompting her to complain that diamonds depreciate far more than gold and, knowing her family’s modest finances, the purchase has left her parents with almost no cash reserves.
She fears future medical or retirement costs will fall on her, making it feel like she indirectly paid for the diamonds herself.
The post sparked widespread discussion online. Many netizens sympathized, calling the diamond gift a bigger loss in value, pointless compared to gold, or even laughable yet frustrating.
Others defended the parents, saying the gift represents genuine love and care, that its sentimental value matters more than resale price, and that she should accept it as a lifelong token of affection rather than focus on investment potential.
