Cathay Pacific has jumped to second place in the world rankings of the 2026 “World’s Best Airlines,” published by AirlineRatings on Wednesday.
The Hong Kong airline, which ranked fourth last year, now sits just behind Qatar Airways, which retained its top position. Hong Kong's own HK Express, a subsidiary of Cathay Pacific, also made history, securing the title of the world’s best low-cost carriers.
In the low-cost carrier category, HK Express won the coveted top spot for the first time.

Sharon Petersen, CEO of AirlineRatings, noted that despite HK Express not offering Wi-Fi or in-flight entertainment, its consistently excellent cabin service and high-quality onboard menu stood out.
“The menu, which we have been able to sample, is a defining highlight, offering a true taste of traditional Hong Kong street food alongside a selection of international favourites. The culinary experience is as much a part of the journey as the destination itself.” Petersen said.
Petersen further highlighted HK Express’ safety record, as the airline was also recognized as the world’s safest low-cost carrier for the second consecutive year in January. This recognition reflects HK Express’s commitment to maintaining high safety standards alongside its excellent service.
“We are deeply proud to be named the world’s best low-cost carrier,” said Jeanette Mao Jie-qiong, CEO of HK Express.
She said the recognition is a tribute to the spirit of Hong Kong and reflects the trust that travelers have placed in the airline.
“We will continue to strengthen our aviation links between Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area, and other parts of Asia, leveraging Hong Kong's unique position as an international aviation hub and ‘super connector.’”
Cathay Pacific, too, made significant strides in this year’s rankings, securing second place overall and winning several awards in specific categories.
The airline took home the “Best Business Class” award, thanks to its newly introduced Aria Suite, which impressed travelers with its elegance and comfort. Cathay Pacific also won the “Best Branded Lounge” award for its ongoing excellence in lounge services, and its cargo division, Cathay Cargo, was recognized as the “Best Branded Cargo Operations.”
Cathay Pacific Group CEO, Ronald Lam Siu-por, expressed his pride in the airline's achievements, stating, “We are committed to investing over HK$100 billion in our fleet, digital innovation, and ground services to strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a leading international aviation hub.”
The AirlineRatings “World’s Best Airlines” rankings focus on factors such as comfort, in-flight products, passenger experience, dining, entertainment systems, seat comfort, service quality, and overall value, though safety records were assessed separately earlier this year.
Aside from Cathay Pacific’s remarkable performance, the ranking also highlighted other top airlines across various categories.
Lufthansa was recognized as the “Best Hybrid Airline,” Porter Airlines earned the title of “Best Regional Airline,” and Jetstar took the prize for “Best Low-Cost Long Haul Airline.” Singapore Changi Airport was named the “Best Airport” for the second consecutive year.
