University researchers have developed reusable face shields using 3D printing that can be washed and reused up to 60 times at an affordable price.
The first order of around 30,000 came from Polytechnic University and is expected to be supplied to staff, students, frontline workers as well as several social service organizations by the end of the month.
A template for the reusable face shield has been sent to factories in Shenzhen and the finished product will be priced from HK$40 to HK$50 each.
"The shields are made of light PET [polyester] material and produced via the process of vacuum forming, making it relatively cheap," said Man Hau-chung, dean of engineering and director of University Research Facility in 3D Printing.
Available in two designs - "general-use face shield" and "extra-protection face shield" - both are able to prevent transmission via virus droplets.
The former covers most of the face, allowing people to eat or drink while wearing it. The second is larger, covering areas such as the forehead and crown.
As well as being adjustable for head sizes and offering good air permeability, the shields can be washed up to 60 times before they start warping.
They were first trialed at the Hong Kong Christian Service and Christian Family Service Centre.
Fiona Tsang Yuen-kei, service director at the former, said most of her cleaners responded positively.
"Elderly caretakers face a lot of risks at our center including [the risk of physical contact] - we don't know if they are any asymptomatic coronavirus carriers who could spread it to the elderly. Once we get enough resources, like the face shields, they will start to make a difference," she said.
