S Korean star denies dating late actress when she was a minor

South Korean actor Kim Soo Hyun has tearfully apologized over allegations he dated late actress Kim Sae Ron when she was underage, marking his first direct response in 21 days amid a massive backlash.

Kim, 37, bowing and expressing remorse, told a news conference in a shaking voice: "I am sorry for causing so much pain to many people. I also feel sad that [Kim Sae Ron] seems unable to rest in peace."

The leading actor in Queen of Tears confessed to lying about his relationship with the actress - who at 24 died of apparent suicide in February - when their selfie surfaced during the drama's airing. He said they dated for a year, but she was no longer a minor then.

"I am a coward," Kim said, adding he prioritized his public image over honesty due to his fear of losing everything. He also feared dragging others into a bad situation.

Kim said he hopes the situation will not affect the drama's production team and staff, and that he accepts all criticism for being selfish. He also apologized to those who loved him.

He emphasized that he would not accept threats or violence.

Kim said there was nothing unusual with their relationship and that it eventually faded - as many relationships do.

He added: "Aside from the fact that we are both actors, [Kim Sae Ron] and I would have been an ordinary couple like others.

"We [liked] each other but after spending time together, we parted ways. Since then, I had rarely kept in touch with her."

He said he had been cautious about contacting Kim Sae Ron, particularly after her drunk-driving accident, as she was in another relationship.

Kim addressed "false allegations" suggested by YouTube channel Garosero Research. "I could not accept being forced to acknowledge lies as facts while being threatened," he added.

Kim also accused Garosero Research and the actress' family at the news conference of manipulating the dates of their dating correspondence and editing KakaoTalk screenshots.

The channel, claiming the two dated for six years, when she was just 15, has released videos and photos it said were taken during their relationship.

Kim rejected rumors the actress committed suicide due to pressure to repay a 700 million won (HK$3.7 million) settlement with his agency.

He concluded by expressing his determination to clear his name, adding he would prove his innocence with action.

His lawyer said they are taking legal action against Kim Sae Ron's family and Garosero Research.
