In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Shiu Ka-chun, the former pro-democracy lawmaker renowned for his social welfare advocacy, faces a significant health battle.Shiu, 55, sought medication three times for an upset stomach last month. A general practitioner told him it was excessive stomach acid and prescribed medicine and rest. But after vomiting a few days later, Shiu visited a specialist.
After undergoing emergency surgery to remove half of his stomach due to gastric cancer, he has lost 15 kilograms.

He was initially diagnosed with gastritis but his condition worsened. Shiu ultimately went to hospital, where he was diagnosed with gastric cancer.
"Although it will be a long journey to recovery, combined with a change in diet and habits, God's words encourage me to overcome the difficulties," he said.
Shiu said his wound's recovery is satisfactory and stopped throwing up right after eating.
He expressed gratitude to Queen Elizabeth Hospital staff for their care and his loved ones for supporting him.
