The new subsidized flats in Kai Tak, offered under the latest Home Ownership Scheme, have quickly become the top choice among applicants following the Housing Authority's opening of applications yesterday.
Many flocked to the Lok Fu office to submit their applications. A total of 160 paper applications and 6,500 online applications were received.
One applicant, currently residing in a subdivided flat in Mong Kok, expressed particular interest in a unit at Kai Ying Court in Kai Tak.
"This is my second time applying for subsidized flats. The living conditions in my subdivided flat are poor, so I'm eager to purchase a flat regardless of which estate it is," she said.
"If I have the opportunity to choose a flat, I wouldn't hesitate to take on two jobs just to pay the mortgage. Otherwise, I'll continue living in my current situation and try again next year."
However, she ruled out On Pak Court in Kwun Tong due to "insufficient transportation options."
Another applicant, Lie, recently arrived from the mainland with her five-year-old son to reunite with her husband - a Hong Kong permanent resident - and their 18-year-old daughter.
"We are currently living in public rental housing under my husband's aunt's name," she said.
"With my husband as the sole breadwinner, earning HK$40,000 a month, affording a private flat would be challenging," Lie said. "My first choice is Kai Ying Court because it's convenient for my children's schooling."
Another hopeful, So, submitted his application yesterday morning, aiming to secure a flat for himself and his wife.
"Kai Ying Court is my top choice since I have relatives in Kai Tak, but I'm also considering On Pak Court in Kwun Tong because it's closer to my parents' home," he said.
This year's scheme will offer a total of 7,132 units, including those at Kai Ying Court in Kai Tak, Ko Hei Court in Yau Tong, On Pak Court in Kwun Tong, Yu Hing Court in Tung Chung, and Siu Wu Court in Tuen Mun.
Prices range from HK$1.43 million to HK$4.67 million, with saleable areas between about 186 and 510 square feet.
The application deadline is set for 7pm on October 23, with ballots expected to be drawn in the fourth quarter of this year.
