Thrill seekers have all-clear to carry on

Legislator Nixie Lam wants a financial levy slapped on people who need rescuing while engaging in outdoor activities in extreme weather conditions.

She says more and more people are concerned that some among them ignore official warnings and continue to seek fun in outdoor activities even during extreme weather and then must be rescued if in distress, which leads to huge costs and puts rescuers' lives in danger.

"Although it is the duty of rescuers to provide help, irresponsible behavior that puts their lives in danger should not be condoned," declared Lam.

But her thinking was rejected by acting secretary for security Michael Cheuk Hau-yip. He said efficient emergency services will be provided to people in distress under all circumstances.

"The last thing we want to see is those in need being hesitant to seek emergency services for any reasons, including a levy," Cheuk said.
