Jockey Club supports city’s first World Fencing Championships as Official Community Partner

Hong Kong is set to welcome a landmark sporting event as the Fencing World Championships 2026 Hong Kong, China opens tomorrow at AsiaWorld-Expo. Being staged in Hong Kong for the first time, the nine-day tournament brings together elite fencers from around the world while offering local residents a unique opportunity to experience the excitement of the sport up close.

As the event’s Official Community Partner for the first time, The Hong Kong Jockey Club is supporting a year-long Jockey Club Fencing Community Programme in partnership with the Fencing Association of Hong Kong, China (FAHKC). Spanning the period before, during and after the tournament, the programme aims to make fencing more accessible to the wider community and contribute to the sport’s long-term development in Hong Kong.

A range of community activities has been designed to engage people of all ages and backgrounds. During the championships, members of the public can take part in fencing workshops to gain a better understanding of the sport’s rules and techniques, while a VR fencing booth will offer an interactive introduction to fencing. The programme also provides complimentary tickets to the world-class international fencing tournament for members of the public from different backgrounds. 

Beneficiaries of JC Project MuSE, initiated and funded by the Club’s Charities Trust, will also have the opportunity to attend championship matches and join guided tours led by FAHKC coaches, helping to inspire greater interest in the sport among young people.

Part of the community outreach has already begun. Last month, former Hong Kong team fencers and professional coaches conducted fencing masterclasses at local schools, introducing students to the fundamentals of fencing through hands-on experience.

Beyond the competition, the programme places a strong emphasis on community capacity building. Internship opportunities for university students and a volunteer training programme will help develop talent and build a pool of trained volunteers to support sporting events. Meanwhile, members of the Club’s CARE@HKJC Volunteer Team will also participate in the event, including carrying the flags of different participating countries and territories during the opening ceremony. Additionally, they will provide operational support for the championships, such as crowd management, to help ensure the event runs smoothly.

Through these programme initiatives, more people will have the opportunity to connect with the sport and develop a deeper appreciation of fencing. At the same time, the programme complements broader efforts to strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a premier destination for major international sporting events.
