Hong Kong Tramways will offer free rides all day tomorrow to celebrate the system being named the "largest tram fleet with a double decker system" by Guinness World Records.
The double-decker system refers to a tram system running on two decks and on gauge tracks with trolley poles.
The announcement came after the Guinness award on July 30. In a statement yesterday, the company called the award a joyous moment that coincided with the Tokyo Olympics success of local athletes, who won one gold, two silver and three bronze medals.
It also said the award was a significant recognition of the relentless efforts of the company's staff over the past 117 years and its trams for being an iconic mobile landmark. "Looking ahead, the Ding Dings [the nickname for trams] will continue to serve the community to make our heritage icon a collective pride of our city," the company said.
Meanwhile, a series of crossover events, including a photo exhibition featuring moments when tram pictures were taken with Leica cameras and a collection of tram-themed goods, will run until November 4.
A HK Tramways World Record pop-up store, which features photo-taking hot spots and a cafe, will run until August 22.
Founded in 1904, Hong Kong Tramways operates 165 tram cars, including two antique party tram cars, one sightseeing tram car and one unique tram, "No. 18."
