Hong Kong Customs arrested two incoming passengers at Hong Kong International Airport on March 14 for allegedly trafficking about 8 kilograms of suspected cannabis buds with an estimated market value of about HK$1.7 million.
A 41-year-old male passenger arrived from Bangkok, Thailand, and was found carrying the suspected cannabis in his carry-on suitcases during customs clearance. He was immediately arrested.
Following a follow-up investigation, Customs officers arrested a 39-year-old male passenger who also arrived from Bangkok on the same day, suspected to be connected with the case.
The two arrested individuals have been jointly charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. Their case will be heard at West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts on March 16.
Customs said it will continue to intensify enforcement against drug trafficking through intelligence analysis and risk assessment, focusing on passengers from high-risk regions. The department reminded the public not to participate in drug trafficking for monetary gain, accept hiring to carry controlled items, or carry unknown items for others.
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug carries a maximum penalty of a HK$5 million fine and life imprisonment.
