An elderly passenger and the taxi driver both died after the vehicle collided head-on with a dump truck on Fan Kam Road in Sheung Shui on Thursday morning (Mar 5).
The accident happened at around 11.25am when a New Territories taxi travelling towards Tsuen Wan near the Fanling Golf Course crashed into a 16-tonne dump truck.
The taxi driver and a female passenger were trapped and unconscious inside the vehicle. Rescuers arrived at the scene and rushed both to North District Hospital for treatment, but they were later pronounced dead.
According to reports, the female passenger, believed to be in her 80s, was a native of San Tin and lived in Tse Uk Village, Kam Tin. She was reportedly on her way to visit her sister-in-law at North District Hospital, who had been admitted with pneumonia, when the accident occurred.
Police cordoned off the scene and are investigating the cause of the crash.
Both directions of Fan Kam Road near Po Kin Road were temporarily closed due to the incident, with some nearby residents forced to enter and leave the area on foot.
