CLPe, a subsidiary of CLP Holdings, announced on Tuesday that in collaboration with CNOOC (Shenzhen) International Marine Clean Energy Co., Ltd, it successfully completed Hong Kong’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) ship-to-ship bunker operation for a Very Large Crude Carrier, Maran Dione, on February 24.
The operation was conducted at the South Cheung Chau Anchorage. Approximately 4,700 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas were transferred to Maran Dione in about seven hours.
After bunkering, the vessel can sail continuously for around 12,000 nautical miles – roughly the round-trip distance between the Middle East and East Asia – without intermediate refuelling.
Ringo Ng Wing-ho, Managing Director of CLPe, noted that the group has served as a “super connector,” working with CNOOC to introduce advanced bunkering services to Hong Kong and to provide world-class energy solutions for international shipping.
He said the operation not only demonstrates CLPe’s capability to serve a wide range of vessel types but also underscores the group’s commitment to promoting green marine fuels.
“By attracting a wider spectrum of green-energy oceangoing vessels, we are supporting Hong Kong’s development as a green marine fuel bunkering centre and strengthening its position as a leading international maritime hub,” he said.
Last June, CLPe teamed up with CNOOC to supply liquefied natural gas to the container vessel Hanoi Express from the German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd AG during
cargo handling at Kwai Tsing Container Terminals.
Around 10,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas were delivered to the vessel. The operation was the largest single LNG bunkering in Hong Kong to date and marked the city’s first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering with simultaneous cargo-handling.
