An electric Volvo car caught fire in an open-air car park in Tin Shui Wai on Wednesday night, spreading to two nearby vehicles.
The blaze broke out at around 10.30pm at a car park near a village house in Ha Tsuen. The Volvo's rear suddenly caught fire, with the flames quickly spreading to an Audi parked in front and a BMW behind it. Explosions were heard.
Firefighters arrived and extinguished the blaze with hoses and fire blankets. A preliminary investigation suggested the electric car fire may have been caused by a short circuit and is not considered suspicious.
About 10 residents were evacuated due to thick smoke. No one was injured or trapped.
The Volvo's female owner said she had owned the car for about two years. She parked it in the car park about an hour before the fire and was not charging it at the time.
A nearby resident reported hearing explosions and seeing car debris flying toward his home, which suffered damage to an exterior wall, an air-conditioning unit, and a gas pipe.
The Volvo was severely burnt. The Audi's rear was slightly damaged with its license plate melted, and the BMW's front was also burnt.
