A Wan Chai toy shop on Thursday exposed a fraud attempt after a caller posing as a staff member from a San Po Kong school ordered toys, then switched to requesting help with an expensive food purchase.
The shop stated on social media today that they had received a call from someone claiming to be a director surnamed Fung from Ho Lap College, speaking poor Cantonese.
He first asked for 50 toys and sent a forged name card, then suddenly requested assistance ordering a luxury dish called Buddha's Temptation.
Suspicious staff contacted the school directly and confirmed the person did not exist.
Netizens noted obvious errors on the fake card, such as the incorrect school name, Gmail address, and font mismatches.
Other shop employees have also come out and stated that the scams have repeatedly targeted businesses with fake orders followed by requests for high-value items or advance payments.
Ho Lap College has also issued a statement warning suppliers of impostors impersonating staff to place orders, stressing that genuine large purchases require formal quotes and approvals, and urging immediate verification by contacting the school directly before proceeding.
