The government announced on Wednesday night the removal of the Tianjin Liaison Unit director Ricky Cheng Chun-sang, after he had drawn criticism over whether he improperly accepted private benefits during his posting to Tianjin.

Cheng posted on social media that he was "lucky" to get a complimentary suite upgrade at the Ritz-Carlton Tianjin and was "quite pleased," and shared last May that a TurboJET executive arranged for him to travel in a private cabin from Hong Kong to Macau.
Following further investigation into the concerns raised by Cheng's social media posts, the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau said it believes that the "upgraded" ferry seat Cheng received is suspected of violating the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance. The case has been referred to law enforcement for follow-up.
The Bureau said Cheng is a contract employee and has decided to terminate his contract immediately.
The government directory listed the Tianjin Liaison Unit director post as vacant last night, before the formal announcement.

The Bureau said earlier on Wednesday that Cheng paid for his upgraded flight and accommodation in Tianjin, with no public funds involved, and that his hotel membership led to the room upgrade, while it is investigating the TurboJET arrangement.
The Beijing office of the Hong Kong government has also reminded Cheng to be mindful of public perception when sharing personal experiences on social media.
