Poland, one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, is now turning its commercial gaze eastward, with Hong Kong seen as a potential springboard into the Asian markets. This shift in strategy was outlined by Michał Kołodziejski, Consul General of Poland in Hong Kong, in an exclusive interview.

Following its integration into Western European supply chains post-liberation, Poland has built a robust export economy known for competitive quality and price. “Polish companies in the past sold to Western Europe. Now they are confident enough to explore new markets,” Kołodziejski said. He highlighted that many products of global retailers like Ikea are manufactured in Poland, yet the “Made in Poland” brand remains under-recognized.
While acknowledging Hong Kong’s high operational costs, which can deter companies until “they have confidence,” the Consul General emphasized the city’s strategic role. “It is easy for people to set up companies here,” he noted, positioning Hong Kong as an ideal base for penetrating the Asian and Chinese markets. He pointed to existing Polish successes in Hong Kong’s food and beverage scene, such as Que Pasa restaurant, which was brought to Warsaw and was promoted by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, and Flying Pig Bistro, which offers a variety of western dishes. Kołodziejski also pinpointed Polish fintech such as the BLIK payment platform as having export potential.

Que Pasa is a Spanish restaurant opened by a Pole. The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra was hosted there after a performance with some Polish musicians.
With approximately 1,000 Poles residing in Hong Kong, the consulate is fostering community roots. He has initiated a “Polish Saturday” school
to help children connect with their heritage. He also highlighted improved connectivity with the construction of a new Warsaw airport, paving way
for direct flights and bypassing inefficient routes through Western Europe. “Given Poland’s central position, easier routes can be created,” he said.
He positions Poland not just as a successful European story, but an aspiring global partner, citing the visit of Secretary for Financial Services
and Treasury Christopher Hui Ching-yu last September. Hong Kong is a gateway for Poland to introduce its products, technology, and culture to the new hemisphere.
HK’s competitive edge: sustained by ‘One Country, Two Systems’
While assessing Hong Kong’s international position, Michał Kołodziejski -- Consul General of Poland in Hong Kong -- underscored that the city’s unique advantages under the “One Country, Two Systems” framework are crucial for its relevance as a global hub.

Kołodziejski met President Xi Jinping who visited Poland in 2016.

Drawing on his experience across Japan, Singapore, and Australia, Kołodziejski expressed confidence in Hong Kong’s capacity to rebound and maintain its distinct role. “Hong Kong has the advantages to rebound, especially with ‘One Country, Two Systems,’” he stated. This uniqueness is non-negotiable for Poland’s diplomatic and commercial presence, adding “if Hong Kong turns to another Chinese city, we will close the office.”
Over the past year, Polish companies have had some of the biggest pavilions at various trade shows in Hong Kong, ranging from food and beverages to cosmetics and personal care.
However, the Consul General identified a significant challenge. With a background in Asian studies, he said “Hong Kong’s issue is reputation,” where “one negative news will overshadow 10 positive news.” He revealed that for many in Poland, awareness of Hong Kong is limited and often filtered through specific controversies.
Beyond politics, Kołodziejski who resides in Shouson Hill highlighted the city’s appealing duality. “There are both urban life and nature,” he said, a living testament to Hong Kong’s appeal among international residents. His comments paint a picture of a city at a crossroads, where its legal and political frameworks directly impact its diplomatic and economic partnerships. Hong Kong’s ability to manage its global narrative and uphold its identity will be pivotal in retaining international presence.
Bridging cultures: Poland and Hong Kong's growing exchange
Beyond growing trade and investment, a shared appreciation for culture and heritage strengthens the bond between Poland and Hong Kong.
While Hong Kong’s modern identity is relatively young, Poland’s deep heritage—epitomized by UNESCO sites such as the vast 14th-century Malbork Castle— offers a compelling window into European history for the city's visitors and cultural enthusiasts.

Through festivals and events, both places foster a dynamic cultural partnership rooted in historical appeal and present-day creativity.
Polish cinema, with well-known directors like Roman Polanski, continues to feature prominently at international film festivals including those in Asia, while musical partnerships also bridge the continents. Notably, the Hong Kong Chinese orchestra performed with a celebrated Polish cello quartet. This collaboration was set to continue with a reciprocal performance in Poland.
Local community engagement is similarly vibrant, as evidenced by Polish festivals being held in Hong Kong locales like Cheung Chau.
Music, particularly by the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin, serves as a key conduit. The Chopin Festival and initiatives like “Chopin Avenue” – which organizes competitions for young pianists across Asia – nurture musical talent and appreciation. Educational ties are growing simultaneously, with an increasing number of Hong Kong students choosing Poland for their university studies, drawn by its academic heritage and central European position.
These multifaceted exchanges from medieval architecture to film, classical music, and education, illustrate a dynamic relationship between Poland and Hong Kong that moves beyond diplomacy and commerce.
