A BMW driver led police on a high-speed chase exceeding 170 kilometers per hour for over 11 kilometers in Kowloon early Thursday before crashing into a railing.
Police from the Kowloon East Traffic Task Force had set up a roadblock on Fuk To Street in Ngau Tau Kok for an anti-crime operation. A black BMW sedan turned around upon seeing the checkpoint and fled along Lung Cheung Road and Ching Cheung Road.
The chase ended when the driver reached a dead end on Tat Mei Road near the Kwai Chung container terminals, braked suddenly, lost control and hit a railing. The man tried to flee on foot but was subdued by officers after a struggle in which a policeman was pushed to the ground.
The officer was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital. Suspected Viagra was found on the man and about 10 grams of suspected cocaine was seized from the car's glove compartment.
The driver was arrested for multiple offences including driving while disqualified, car theft, dangerous driving, driving without third-party insurance, possessing Part 1 poisons, drug possession, assaulting police and obstructing officers.
Police dogs were called but found nothing further.
