Lan Kwai Fong drew crowds on Christmas Eve, with visitors praising its festive atmosphere and an industry association forecasting a five to 10 percent rise in footfall and a five percent increase in spending compared to last year.
The popular nightlife area saw a noticeable increase in people, including families and tourists, from around 9pm. Many wore Christmas headbands to add to the spirit.
Local resident Mr Tsui, who dined with his family there for about HK$2,000, said while Tsim Sha Tsui had more decorations, Lan Kwai Fong was livelier. His daughter, visiting for the first time, found it exciting and hoped to return next year.
Shanghai tourist Eric, visiting with his wife, said Hong Kong had the strongest Christmas atmosphere of any mainland city he had visited. He planned to visit restaurants and bars and was not overly concerned about cost for a good experience.
Indian Hongkonger Uss said the area was lively after she visited the "Winter Wonderland in Central" . She had already spent nearly HK$500 with family.
Lan Kwai Fong Association director Anthea Cheung said restaurant bookings were over 90 percent full, with some bars featuring world-renowned DJs. She noted the recent general economic and social mood, plus residents traveling abroad, had some impact, but growing tourist numbers, including higher-spending group and European and American visitors visitors, were helping. She expected the rises in footfall and spending.
