HK Sends 280 athletes to the National Games for Persons with Disabilities and Special Olympics

More than 280 Hong Kong athletes will compete in next week’s 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and 9th National Special Olympic Games of China, with 42 table tennis players chasing medals across multiple impairment categories.

The table tennis events are split between the National Games for Persons with Disabilities, featuring mainly physical, intellectual, hearing and visual impairments, and the Special Olympics for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Competitions range from wheelchair and standing classes to specific levels for hearing-impaired and visually-impaired players.

Among the standout Hong Kong representatives is TT8-class player Wong Hon-lam, a former able-bodied junior national team member whose career was halted by a permanent hip injury.

Now making his debut at the National Games, Wong is determined to win at least one medal.

In October he and mixed-doubles partner Pang Wing-ka, also debuting, claimed gold at the ITTF Asian Para Championships 2025 and are considered strong medal prospects.

Pang Wing-ka, competing in the TT6 class due to congenital cerebral palsy that affects the right side of her body, relies on her left side in daily life and on the court.

She says powerful attacking shots can throw her off balance but, when successful, give her great confidence and a sense of achieving what she wants to do.

Events for classes TT1–10 plus hearing and visual impairment categories will be held in Guangzhou, while Hong Kong will host the TT11 class and all Special Olympics table tennis competitions at Tsuen Wan Sports Centre.
