Airport police arrested a 58-year-old mainland Chinese man on suspicion of theft after passengers aboard flights from Kuala Lumpur to Hong Kong reported missing valuables worth HK$2,500 mid-flight.
The incident occurred last Friday (Nov 28) when a passenger on the flight discovered missing valuables, including Hong Kong dollars and foreign currencies, from the overhead compartments.
The case is being followed up by the Fourth Criminal Investigation Team of the Airport District.
In response to such incidents, airport police will continue to conduct public education and awareness campaigns while maintaining close contact with the Hong Kong Airport Authority, Aviation Security Company Limited, and the airlines.
Travelers are urged to remain alert while inside the aircraft cabin, to secure their belongings, and to check personal items before leaving the aircraft.
Authorities also reminded the public that theft is a serious crime and can result in imprisonment of up to ten years upon conviction.
