Road closures will take effect across Kowloon from early Sunday morning as a record-breaking 6,000 cyclists join this year’s Hong Kong Cyclothon.
This year’s competitive races will introduce a new “one-lap race” format on entirely new courses, with cyclists starting from Salisbury Road and finishing at the Jordan Road Flyover near shopping mall Elements.
Mason Hung Chung-hing, the Tourism Board’s Director of Event and Product Development, said the men’s 30km race will be particularly demanding, spanning four districts and passing through the Cheung Tsing Tunnel, Ting Kau Bridge, Nam Wan Tunnel and Stonecutters Bridge.
He added that the women’s 8km race will showcase some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower, the Hong Kong Space Museum, the Xiqu Centre and the Hong Kong Palace Museum. Two-time Olympic medalist Sarah Lee Wai-sze is among the participants.
Meanwhile, the non-competitive rides will retain their previous routes. The 50km ride will feature a star-studded lineup including Hong Kong cyclist Ceci Lee Sze-wing—fresh off three gold medals at the National Games—and British cycling legend Mark Cavendish, the first rider in Tour de France history to win 35 stage titles.
Transportation arrangements
To facilitate the event, police will implement phased road closures beginning at 1am on Sunday (Nov 30).
The Lantau Link (Kowloon-bound) will be among the first closures, with the Tsing Ma Bridge expected to reopen at around 7.15am, followed by the Eagle’s Nest Tunnel at approximately 9am.
Roads in Tsim Sha Tsui are expected to resume normal operations by 11.30am, with all remaining routes fully reopened by 1pm.
As the race mainly occupies lanes heading toward Kowloon, traffic from West Kowloon to the airport and the New Territories will remain unaffected.
However, closures will impact 56 bus routes and 15 green minibus routes, resulting in diversions, truncations and temporary stop relocations.
From 2.30am to 10.30am, the Star Ferry Public Transport Interchange and China Hong Kong City Public Transport Interchange will be closed.
Suspensions will also apply to all on-street parking spaces, bus stops, taxi stands and minibus stands within the affected areas.
Anticipating crowding in Tsim Sha Tsui, the Transport Department urged the public to plan ahead and use public transport whenever possible.
Cyclothon Carnival
The Hong Kong Tourism Board will host a Cyclothon Carnival at the Art Park in the West Kowloon Cultural District from 6am to 6pm on Sunday (Nov 30), featuring live music, sports performances and food stalls.
