Eleven Hong Kong universities have been featured in the Quacquarelli Symonds Sustainability Rankings 2026, with the University of Hong Kong placing first locally and 137th globally.

The international higher education research agency released the results on Tuesday, assessing nearly 2,000 institutions worldwide across environmental impact, social impact and governance categories.
HKU scored 87.5 points overall. In response to inquiries, the university said as Asia's leading institution, it has consistently provided quality education and pursued excellence in teaching, research and knowledge exchange.
Chinese University followed as Hong Kong's second highest-ranked institution with 85.7 points, placing 164th worldwide. City University scored 82.8 points to rank 212th globally and third in Hong Kong.
Eight publicly-funded local universities placed within the top 700 globally. Hong Kong University of Science and Technology ranked 230th, Polytechnic University placed 251st, Baptist University stood at 359th, Education University ranked 571st and Lingnan University placed 613th.
City University noted it was the only one among Hong Kong's top five institutions to show ranking improvement, reflecting international recognition of its commitment to promoting sustainable development. HKUST said it would continue advancing in industry-academia-research collaboration to contribute to society.
Education University president John Lee Chi-kin said the ranking reflects efforts by staff and students in integrating UN Sustainable Development Goals into all aspects of campus life. Lingnan University said its significant ranking progress shows international acknowledgment of its achievements in building a diverse, inclusive and equal campus.
